P(X=x) = exp(lambda)???

Sometimes i fail to understand life.
and people.
Like the QM prof.
When he gave us a problem today, "Assume a hen hatches eggs according to a poisson distribution...."
WHAT THE??
Does IT even know?
And why should i bother aT ALL??
wat good is this to the world??
Stumped...

well i dont write often here...but my friend... it is useful to the world...hen laying eggs might not be a typical example of poisson distribution (as we use it for more rare events like a tsunami..or actually "me writing to my friends" or a "cock laying eggs", the latter having a higher probability of occuring) well IMO tht is the fundamental distribution used at the Barclays research team in UK to predict stock market crashes ...

you can guess who...

ok well i cant guess who.

and to the anonymous who had written abt the barclays thingy.....this is NOT useful to the world...probably to u the world is just composed of the rich n all, but my friend, there is more to the world than stock markets and distributions...broaden ur horizons..!!

So Manish - u mean to say that u expect to learn how to help ppl at the B schools?
And as a side-note, whoever told u equities and co. are not applicable to non-rich ppl...

ps -
1. I donno what Poisson distribution is exactly about except that it s related to statistics.
2. I am not too sure Poisson and co. are not applicable to rural development in any way...mebbe we need to ask the couple of IIM A and C guys that ve taken to the rural areas for applying their knowldege for the betterment of rural India and CERTAILY not those who land up in these I-banks and marketing co.s

hey manish...

it doesnt mean it is for the rich...if i talk about stock markets..

the stock market example was given only because, my friend girish is involved in the domain...and i thought that would make more sense to him...

and by no way tsunami refers to the rich in particular...makes me wonder how u havent read the complete comment but went ahead to advice me to broaden my horizon!

And something at the tip of my fingers..waiting for me to type it...

lets draw an example,

lets say girish is not "rich"
(at least at present...god knows how much he is gonna draw after graduating from IIM A..giri enna marandhudadha..) and lets assume he is gonna work for an investment banking company, i guess it is he who would think of stock market crash and not the guy who is actually investing with him..who by the way is sure to be filthy rich and knows nuts about poisson...

coming back to the point...tell me a field concerning the "poor" or the "rich" and i will give u myriad examples of how we use statistics in tht field to improve/predict the situation...

Welcome to the blog G-Glow! (thats manish's nickname here, and manish is my seat neighbor in class)

interestin debate this.
for starters... I AM NOT GOIN TO WORK FOR AN INVESTMENT BANK. EVER.

Neways, dont u studs take this discussion off on a tangent. Twas a bored post about a very boring topic, which i thought didnt mean much to me. i still believe that, btw. period.
Lets not have another ISPE debate here. already hated today's debate like crazy. :) (ISPE - Indian Social and Political Environment, i guess).

LOL... Guess i owe some more here, to brahmaputra (aka) BK...
Rich, poor, black, white, whatever.
See.
The point is, IT TOTALLY SUCKS to sit in a QM class and learn how an egg hatches eggs according to a poisson distribution.
Nothing more than that.

(Of course i do realise what we swallow as a bitter pill might be life-saver pill tomoro, or whatever)
My point is made. And quite simply, at that.

hey sleepyhead!
i HATED the ispe lecture too.. i wonder why we even have the course. just tired of being bracketed into the rich/arrogant/brat category simply b/c i got into iima! tired of people telling us we're upto no good.

incidentally tired of ppl running down investment banking.. but that's a different post on a different blog :)
