Our Local lexicon..

Definitely guilty for not having blogged for sometime given the ongoing calm after the storm(s), here is something tht i thought i should write about for people who know me and my gang incompletely. Chances are, you might not understand a word of what we are talkin.. So here i go, givin you some gyaan on our verbals...

Athav :- is a seemingly innocuous word that was born out of the inexplicable sound engineering roots of Mr. Navneeth. The popular technique of reversing a sound wave was thus extended to the sound wave that said 'Vatha' - which in itself is a morph of its more (in)famous cousin, Otha. Usually accompanied by a withdrawal of the hand backwards, as a symbolic reverse of an outstretched hand that usually goes with a disdainful 'vatha'. A pleasant, well-meaning expletive, for once...

Naech :- a brainchild of RamC's.. the word first saw the light of day at the IDPL grounds, when the dons met at dawn.. Can be used interchangeably with 'athav'..

Pedal :- when born, the word was almost always accompanied with the prefix 'pinni', to make it "pinnippedal" in totality.. but of late, pedal stands on its own legs.. substitute for the above said 2 words..

Bright Feature :- our way of saying "Bright Future". has 2 variants, positive and anti-positive. For eg. saying a small girl has a bright feature goes to show our strong belief that she is gonna develop into a fine young lady, whereas saying a singer has a bright feature might actually mean that we see no spark at all in him, and he is destined on the path to definite damnation... both variants are usually accompanied with a clap of the hands, shoulder shrugs and a wry laugh.. RR deserves the plaudits for pioneering this phrase..

Laikki Child:- a direct lift from a Vadivelu comedy classic, its a customised way of saying "like a child", initially coined to sneer at someone u thought was behaving like a kid. But these days, context is immaterial. When bored, just clap your hands and say "laikki child".. RR's favorite phrase this...

Shoore :- Courtesy one of my illustrious classmates at Hindustan College of Engineering, this phrase has stayed on.. Put simply, this is just "Sure" gone wrong. Nevertheless, the word has since then spread FAR and wide, and is now prevalent abundantly...

Can :- traces its origins to my singaporean sojourn.. Is a one-word answer that conveniently replaces "yes" or "ok" or "i will come" or "the food is good" or "she looks awesome" or "there is still time" or anything at all that has a hint of positivity around it. definitely can. makki's favorite of late... last seen using this word one hell of a lot.

Kuruvikkoodu :- Thanks to Sriram - RR's classmate - for this one. and this word is absobloodylutely convenient. Anything that goes under the broad category of 'sentiment', be it mother-daughter, husband-wife, boyfriend-girlfriend, or simply friend-friend, is strictly kuruvikkoodu. Most tamil film dialogues, like 'Anne.. naa UNGA thambi anne..." or "neenga illaadha oru vaazhkaiya..." or "kaadhal apdingaradhu... oru poo maadiri..." fall under this category.. The word is also extended to real-world situations, and is used on people who take pride in effusively gushing out such lines in real life... ;)

Sshhh :- used to refer to people who are unquestionale kings in their own right.. The title of the blog (does that show my Leo instincts?), the word HAS to be said with finger on your lips.

Studmax :- borrowed from some of the IIT junta that i met at the IIM interviews, the word means pretty much the same as "Sshhh". Quite self-explanatory, the word is yet another way of singing something's glory... like 'have u watched BLACK? Man.. it is studmax...'

Inshaallah Izz.. definitely Izz.. :- This is SR's own. An absolute straight dig at Inzamam ul-haq's way of speaking at pre- and post match talks, SR cant stop when he has started... And it makes me laugh every time.. (no offence Jawad) :-)

Anything i have left out, tis upto u guys to point out..

Given all that, here is how a sample conversation takes place when guys come home...Cricket being played in full vigor. inevitably.

Girish :- Bowling da SR. Seriyaana length.. pedal
J :- Andha solid defence paathalla... Sshhh... Sshhh... Aey!! Sshhh...
Makki :- Oye.. Shoore edge idhellaam.. Can Can apdinnu edge...
RR :- Anna ennanna idhu... Laikki Child...
(At a passing gurl on the road)
Girish :- Aahaa... BK paathiyaa.. Athav!!!
BK runs to the front of house to catch a glimpse of her..RR is already there too..
BK :- Aahaa.. semma saathvigam da... Naech!!
RR :- Annaa.. bright feature naa andha ponnukku... Bright feature...
SR :- Yeah definitely Izz... the boys izz.. inshallah izz... we bounce back izz... sulman bhatt izz..izz....izzzzz...
J :- andha ponnellaam innum four years da... Shoore Studmax dhaan...
RR :- J anna... neenga vennaa ippo oru six adinga.. naa andha ponnu kitta poi ongala pathi edhaanum kuruvikkoodu panni Laikki Child haha... nalla... a... ha ha...

And there i choose to stop the nonsense.
Sshhh....

SHOORE maa..... This is becoming popular beyond belief here at Tech..... NAECH is not the word for all this...

Remnants of my madras roots, these two happen to be the only ones which I brought here to Tech ... Though we have a few of our own...mostly thanks to goundamni or vadivelu... the most popular ones being...

I am the " one step back".... meaning to be taken quite literally.. jus means u wanna be as far removed from whatever's happening or from that certain person....

but my personal fave.. is "I am blind".... Goundamani's immortal dialogue in Indian.. when Kamal and Urmila get a li'l too cozy for comfort....

Most common though.. is butler englees.." I am the escape" or "I the escape, u the come???"....
admittedly though we are light years behind our "native land lingo" .....
